Background of the Study
Quarrying is a critical economic activity in many regions, including Jos South LGA in Plateau State, where the extraction of stones, sand, and minerals supports local and national economies. However, quarrying activities are also associated with significant environmental concerns, particularly air and water pollution. Dust and particulate matter from quarry sites can degrade air quality, while runoff from quarrying operations can lead to the contamination of nearby water bodies. In Jos South LGA, the impact of quarrying on the environment is a growing concern, as local communities depend on these natural resources for sustenance. This study will examine the extent of air and water pollution caused by quarrying activities in Jos South LGA and assess the effectiveness of current mitigation efforts (Aminu & Dahiru, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the economic benefits of quarrying, the environmental degradation caused by these activities in Jos South LGA cannot be ignored. The emission of dust particles and the potential contamination of water sources have had significant impacts on public health, agriculture, and overall environmental quality. However, the extent of these effects and the effectiveness of mitigation measures remain under-researched. This study aims to assess the environmental impact of quarrying on air and water pollution in Jos South and provide recommendations for improving sustainable quarrying practices.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To assess the level of air pollution caused by quarrying activities in Jos South LGA.
• To evaluate the impact of quarrying on water quality in the region.
• To recommend measures for reducing environmental pollution associated with quarrying in Jos South LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
• What are the levels of air pollution caused by quarrying activities in Jos South LGA?
• How has quarrying affected water quality in the region?
• What measures can be taken to reduce the environmental pollution from quarrying in Jos South LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Quarrying activities in Jos South LGA significantly contribute to air pollution in the region.
• H2: Quarrying has led to the contamination of local water bodies in Jos South LGA.
• H3: The implementation of effective environmental management practices can reduce the environmental impact of quarrying in Jos South LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the environmental risks posed by quarrying activities in Jos South LGA. By identifying the extent of air and water pollution, the study will provide valuable data for local authorities, policymakers, and quarry operators to implement more sustainable practices. The findings will also help inform environmental regulations and public health policies aimed at mitigating the negative effects of quarrying (Aminu & Dahiru, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on quarrying activities in Jos South LGA, with an emphasis on the impact on air and water pollution. It will consider both formal and informal quarrying operations in the region. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing comprehensive pollution data and challenges related to obtaining cooperation from quarry operators.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
• Quarrying: The extraction of minerals, stones, and sand from the earth, typically for construction or industrial purposes.
• Air Pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the air, such as dust and particulate matter, which degrade air quality.
• Water Pollution: The contamination of water sources, often caused by runoff from industrial activities like quarrying.
